The Story of the Autograph

Wilson Alvarez is a former left-handed pitcher who worked mostly as a starter during his fourteen seasons in the major leagues. He played from 1989 to 2005 with the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, San Francisco Giants, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Alvarez is a native of Venezuela. His baseball career began when he represented his home town in the 1982 Little League World Series. The Rangers signed him as an amateur free agent in September of 1986 when he was 16. He made his major league debut just three years later on July 24, 1989. Just a few days later he was traded with Scott Fletcher and Sammy Sosa to the White Sox for Harold Baines and Fred Manrique. He next appeared in the majors in 1991 for the White Sox. He pitched a no-hitter in August of that year against the Orioles in just his second start.

He was a part of the regular rotation for the White Sox just two years later and put up a 15-8 record with a 2.95 ERA for one of the best seasons of his career. Although he did struggle with control issues and led the majors in walks too. He went 12-8 the next year and made his one and only All Star game in 1994. After a down year in 1995 he put up good records again in 1996 and 1997, a year that saw him traded to the Giants along with Danny Darwin and Roberto Hernandez for prospects.

In 1998 he was a free agent and moved on to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and was their first pitcher. He pitched Opening Day for them on March 31, 1998 against the Tigers. Ultimately he tended to be inconsistent and dealt with poor conditioning and injuries for the rest of his career. He missed the 2000 and 2001 seasons before coming back for a few years and pitching his last game for the Dodgers on September 28, 2005.

After his playing days he worked as a pitching coach in the minors.

Wilson has a pretty crazy signature. I can definitely see the “Alvarez” but I think the “Wilson” part is a little hard to see. There’s this line of being able to read things v. making a cool signature and he sure is toe that line. I really like the ’92 Fleer Ultra card the best of these.

Thanks Mr. Alvarez! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
