The Story of the Autograph
Joe Carter is a former outfielder and first baseman in the major leagues. He played from 1983 to 1998 with the Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians, San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, and San Francisco Giants.
Carter was born and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He went to Wichita State and was named The Sporting News’ College Player of the Year in 1981. The Cubs drafted him in the first round with the second overall pick of the 1981 MLB Draft. Just two seasons later he debuted for the Cubs on July 30, 1983.
Just a year later he was traded to the Cleveland Indians with others in a deal that sent the Cubs back George Frazier, Ron Hassey and Rick Sutcliffe. In 1985 he was manning the outfield full time and was on his way to putting up some goo numbers. He led the majors in RBI in 1986 with 121 and was regularly getting MVP votes. The Indians decided to move him after the 1989 season in a deal that brought them Sandy Alomar, Jr., Carlos Baerga, and Chris James. But he would only be in San Diego for one season before another trade that sent him to Toronto with Roberto Alomar for Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez.
It was with the Blue Jays that Carter was really recognized for his own success, had some success with the team, and had an amazing feat. He made four consecutive All-Star teams and five in six years. He also had two Silver Slugger awards. But the best part was consecutive World Series championships with the Jays in ’92 and ’93. That included Carter becoming the second player to win a World Series on a walk-off homer.
He would stay with the Jays until 1997 and move on to Baltimore and San Francisco before calling it a career. After his playing days he went into broadcasting and was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.
The Score on Joe Carter – 5.0
Joe has a nice signature and it’s a pretty good size. I think issue with these is that two of them are smudged. With Joe charging for the autograph that makes it frustrating when they don’t come out well. If any of them could have been smudged I wish it would have been the Padres card.
Thanks Mr. Carter! I’m giving this return a 5.
