The Story of the Autograph

Rich “Goose” Gossage is a Hall of Fame closer who pitched 22 seasons in the major leagues from 1972 to 1994. During that time he played for nine teams: Chicago White Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Yankees (twice), San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Texas Rangers, Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners.

Gossage hails from Colorado Springs, Colorado where he played baseball and basketball. He was given the nickname “Goose” because a friend didn’t like his prior nickname (“Goss”) and thought he looked like a goose when looking in for the signs on the mound. The White Sox drafted him out of high school in the ninth round of the 1970 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut with them just two seasons later on April 16, 1972.

I Chicago he once led the majors in saves with 26 in 1975, earning his first All-Star nod. Then the next season he started 29 of the 31 games he pitched and put up a 9-17 record. He was traded to the Pirates where he took up the closers role again and then moved on to the Yankees as a free agent in 1978.

He took on the closer role from Spark Lyle and led the league in saves in 1978 with 27 on his way to earning his fourth straight All-Star Game appearance. He helped them on to the World Series in 1978, which they won, and then again in 1981, where they lost to the Dodgers. He eventually moved on to the Padres via trade after complaining about how the team was run. He then was a key to the Padres reaching the World Series in 1984 and earned his last two (of nine) All-Star appearances with them.

He moved around as a free agent after his time with the Padres. That included a stint in Japan with the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks in 1990.

Goose always has a very fancy signature. He has possibly the best “G” in the TTM game and I feel like we’ve seen some good ones lately. But he always seems to be really neat and clean with his signature. I especially love the “HOF” inscription on this one.

Thanks Mr. Gossage! I’m giving this return an 8.
