The Story of the Autograph
Ron Blomberg is a former major league baseball player who played first base. He played from 1969 to 1978 with the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox.
Blomber, nicknamed “Boomer,” was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He lettered in baseball, basketball, football and track, and was chosen for the Parade All-American teams in all but track, the only person ever chosen for all three. He was offered scholarships but the Yankees drafted him with the first overall pick of the 1967 MLB Draft and he chose to sign. He made his major league debut on September 10, 1969 and made it into four games but wouldn’t be back to the majors until 1971.
He started to get more playing time and played 100 or more games in 1972 and ’73. In 1973 he became the first major league to be used as a designated hitter in a regular season game. That was one of his best seasons as in 100 games he hit .329 with 12 homers and 57 RBI. He would stay with the Yankees until 1977, but he didn’t play in with the Yankees in that last season because of injuries that went back to 1975. He moved on to play for the White Sox but only spent a year there.
After his playing days he wrote a book, has been a big fundraiser and coached and managed. Blomberg is Jewish and managed a team in Israel in their inaugural season of 2007.
The Score on Ron Blomberg – 7.5
While I have a good amount of the ’88 Topps set signed and this is nice to add to that, I would rather have had a “real” card of Ron’s for him to sign. This is the only card of his at all that I think I have as I don’t even think I have anything of his from those 70’s era sets. Ron has a nice and bubbly/loopy signature.
Thanks Mr. Blomberg! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
