The Story of the Autograph
Ed Hearn is a former major league catcher. He played from 1986 to 1988 in the majors with the New York Mets and the Kansas City Royals.
Hearn is a native of Florida. He was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the fourth round of the 1978 MLB Draft out of high school. After several years in their minor league season he was release in January of 1983. The Mets signed him as a minor league free agent and he made his major league debut a few years later on May 17, 1986.
Those were the days of Gary Carter being the number one catcher so any other catcher on the roster would be the back up. Hearn and Barry Lyons fought for the back up job and Lyons won it out. Then not too far into the season Davey Johnson changed his mind and gave Hearn the job. He was on the post season roster but was the only player not to appear. He got his best shot in the majors that season, getting into 49 games.
Prior to the 1987 season Hearn was involved in the deal that sent him, Rick Anderson, and Mauro Gozzo to the Royals for David Cone and Chris Jelic. This started out great for him as he was slated to the be starting catcher in 1987 but a should injury ended his season nine games into the season. He got back the next season to only see action in six games, the last he would play in the majors. He spent four more seasons trying to get back to the bigs and then retired.
Hearn has had a challenging life after baseball. He’s had kidney issues and underwent a transplant and the medication he took caused mood swings that led him to almost commit suicide in 1993. He’s had other medical issues and now works as a motivational speaker and runs a charity for mentoring kids.
The Score on Ed Hearn – 7.0
Ed might have one of my favorite “Es” of all signatures I can think of. It doesn’t always come out my favorite way, but the 1989 Donruss card is probably my favorite example of it. The loop at the top just accentuates the loopy nature of the rest of it.
Thanks Mr. Hearn! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
