The Story of the Autograph

Steve Atwater played safety in the NFL from 1989 through 1999. He primarily played for the Denver Broncos, but spent the last year of his career in New York with the Jets. He spent part of his career playing with Dennis Smith and made up one of the hardest hitting secondaries in the league.

In high school Atwater played as an option style quarterback. When he moved on to college at Arkansas he was switched to a safety. The switch worked out for Steve. He would go on to be named All-Southwest Conference three times and All-American twice. He finished his Razorback career as the all-time leader in interceptions with 14. He went to the 1989 East-West Shrine Game and had two interceptions and garnered the defensive MVP for the game, cementing his status as a prospect for the NFL Draft.

The Broncos took him in the first round of the 1989 NFL Draft with the 20th overall pick. The year before he was drafted the Broncos ranked 27th in the league on defense. With Wade Phillips having Atwater to help the run defense, the team moved up 20 spots and finished 7th as a defense the next year. Atwater would finish second to Derrick Thomas in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. They also made it to the Super Bowl.

Steve would rack up 1,180 tackles, 24 interceptions, and five sacks for his career. He won two Super Bowls, went to eight Pro Bowls, and was a first team All-Pro twice. The Broncos inducted him into their Ring of Fame in 2005. These days Steve works as an insider for the Broncos website and is a fan development manager. He’s been a semifinalist and finalist for the Hall of Fame but hasn’t made it to Canton yet.

The Score on Steve Atwater – 6.5

Steve has a good signature, but I really love the card that he signed. I sent two and I’m really glad that this was the one he signed. I feel like in recent months he was signing more than one at a time, but more recently he appears to just be signing one at a time. The marker came out well, but I think I would like it a little bigger if there was anything to ask for. I like signatures like this that have similar elements to the name and give you a little repetition. Crossing the “t” in each name are what do it for Steve.

Thanks Mr. Atwater! These get a 6.5.
