The Story of the Autograph

Rick Peters is a former outfielder in the major leagues. Mostly playing centerfield, he played from 1979 to 1986 with the Detroit Tigers and Oakland Athletics.

Peters was born and raised in the Los Angeles area in California. After high school he went on to attend Arizona State and was a member of their 1977 College World Series winning team, leading them as a senior co-captain with a team leading .426 average. He was drafted three times before signing. The Twins drafted him in the 18th round of the 1973 MLB Draft out of high school, then by the Braves in the 12th round of the 1976 MLB Draft out of ASU, and finally by the Tigers in the seventh round of the 1977 MLB Draft.

He hit well in the minors with Jim Leyland as his manager and played with other guys who would be big for the Tigers in future years: Kirk Gibson, Jack Morris, Dan Petry, and Tom Brookens. He made his major league debut as a September call-up on September 8th 1979. He played 133 games forthe tigers in 1980 with a .291 average, two homers and 42 RBI. But in 1981 his playing time dropped to just 63 games. Then in 1982 he underwent surgery to repair a nerve on his right arm and the Tigers ended up releasing him after missing the season.

In 1983 he moved on to the A’s. He kept bouncing back and forth to the majors with them and couldn’t catch on. He only played with the big club in 1983 and 1986 and never appeared in more than 55 games again.

After retiring he worked as a coach in the Astros organization and managed the Auburn Astros in 1990.

Rick, who signs as “Ricky”, has a really fun signature. I mean how can you not like that he puts a star over the “i” in his name. That’s pretty darn fun. He definitely looks like he puts some care into his signature and that includes trying to find a good place to put it.

Thanks Mr. Peters! I’m giving this return a 6.
