The Story of the Autograph

John D’Acquisto is a former major league pitcher. He played ten seasons in the majors from 1973 through 1982 with the San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres, Montreal Expos, California Angels and Oakland Athletics.

D’Acquisto was born and raised in San Diego, California. The Giants drafted him out of high school in the first round of the 1970 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut three years later on September 2, 1973. In 1974 he went 12-14 with a 3.77 ERA and was named the NL Rookie Pitcher of the Year. Unfortunately he missed most of 1974 after elbow surgery.

In 1976 he was traded to the Cardinals (with Mike Caldwell and Dave Rader) but he only appeared in three games with the Cardinals because he was on the injured list. The Cardinals then traded him to the Padres in May of 1977. He showed promise in the Padres bullpen in 1978 with a 4-3 record, 10 saves and a 2.13 ERA, but moved back into the rotation the following year and struggled a bit.

After the Padres he moved around a lot. He was traded to Montreal, moved as a free agent to the Angels and released, signed by Atlanta (where he never appeared in a major league game) then released, signed by Oakland and released the next year, and finally signed by the White Sox. He never appeared with the White Sox and retired after arm surgery in 1983. In 1989 he came back in the Senior Professional Baseball Association and went 5-4 with 4 saves for two teams.

After baseball D’Acquisto became an investment advisor. He got into trouble on multiple occasions and went to prison for forged documents, defrauding invenstors, wire fraud and money laundering.

The Score on John D’Acquisto – 6.0

John has a pretty classic signature. He used a thin marker that really goes with the style and size of autograph he has. You can see he’s a signer who tries to find the best place on the card to sign that shows his signature, no matter what angle or direction that might need to be to get that done. He also sent a business card that he signed for his book, Fastball John.

Thanks Mr. D’Acquisto. I’m giving this return a 6.
