The Story of the Autograph

Jim Clancy is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. For the majority of his career he worked as a starter and turned to relieving later in his career. His long career lasted 15 years and he played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Houston Astros, and Atlanta Braves.

Clancy was born and raised in Chicago, IL and was drafted by the Texas Rangers out of high school in the 1974 MLB Draft. He spent a few years in their minor league system but was left unprotected in the 1976 MLB Expansion Draft and the Blue Jays picked him up with the sixth pick.

He would make his debut for the Blue Jays on July 26th of the following season. Interestingly enough, it was against the Rangers and the Blue Jays got shellacked. The lost 14-0 and Clancy only lasted two innings. But he’d pick up his first victory the next start. Clancy was a Blue Jay until the 1988 season. He made the All-Star team in 1982 while on the way to putting up a 16-14 record wit a 3.71 ERA and leading the league in games started with 40.

Clancy never had better than a .600 record and put up a 5.00+ ERA six times in his career. He also led the league in walks (1980) and earned runs (1984) during is career. He was a solid pitcher when good, but did have some seasons that were lacking.

The Score on Jim Clancy – 4.5

Jim can tend to have a swipe of a signature. Of course it’s more than that. But I imagine when you get the reputation of a guy that signs your cards, you probably get more cards, and you probably want to get them all signed and out of there. A couple of these came out with smudges unfortunately.

Thanks Mr. Clancy! I’m giving this return a 4.5.
