The Story of the Autograph

Bill Stoneman pitched in the major leagues for eight years and played for the Cubs, Expos and Angels. He was primarily a starting pitcher but did work in relief mostly during the first two years of his career with the Cubs. He was an All-Star in 1972 and pitched two no-hitters.

Stoneman was born in Illinois but grew up in southern California. He ultimately played college ball for the University of Idaho and helped them win a conference title in 1964 as a sophomore. They won the conference again when he was a senior and they made it to the NCAA playoffs for the first time but were eliminated wen they were one step away from the College World Series with their best record ever at 31-9. The Cubs then drafted him in the 31st round of the 1966 draft.

After just a little more than a year in the minors, Stoneman was promoted to the Cubs in 1967 to be a reliever. The Expos picked him up in the Expansion Draft in 1968 and he started games there for five years. He threw his two no-hitters as an Expo in 1969 against the Phillies and then in 1972 against the Mets. It was the first no-hitter ever thrown in Canada.

He was small in stature, but he was a workhorse and pitched 200+ innings for four straight years. In 1971 he struck out 251 batters in 295 innings and posted a winning record (17-16) for a losing Montreal team.

The Score on Bill Stoneman – 5.5

I’ve gotten few ball point pen signatures lately. It’s always a bit disappointing to get those back. You still have to appreciate getting anything at all back, but using a Sharpie should be a simple thing to do. The good side to this one though is that he was able to have a good spot to sign on this card. One of the downsides to ball points is that they can’t really cut through a dark spot or a busy spot on the card, but in this case there’s a great spot for it.

Thanks Mr. Stoneman! I’m giving this a 5.5.
